Wolves supporters raise over £63,000 for good causes

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC have been supporting the work of Tettenhall Rotary Club for 25 years now - allowing members of the Club and the charities that we work with to collect around the Molineux Stadium in each of those 25 years.

Former Wolves vice-president and England cricketer Rachael Heyhoe Flint was instrumental in establishing the pre-match collections and to recognise her contribution the annual collection days is now known as Rachael's Day.

Over the years Wolves supporters have donated £63,038 to the good causes that we work with - the latest collection raising £2,823 for Power Pleas which with gift aid will rise to over £3,500.

We're tremendously grateful to Wolves and to all of the Club's supporters who continue to help us help others.

Support for KIngswood Trust

The generous support which you have given to our Santa Sleigh this year has meant that the Club can continue to help local charities such as the Kingswood Trust.

For nearly 100 years the Kingswood site has given children from Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of learning with nature. Originally established in 1923 as a holiday camp for poor children the site was acquired by the education authority after World War II to become an open air school for delicate children – many suffering from breathing problems and poor nourishment. With the improvement in the health of children in the early 1970’s the site’s focus shifted and it become an environmental residential centre for schools to learn in the great outdoors. Now an independent charity Kingswood Trust continues to provide outdoor education activities connecting children and the community to the natural world.

You can help the continuing work of Kingswood Trust by donating here - https://discover-kingswood.org.uk/outdoor-education/

Support for Acorns Hospice

Since it was established in 1988, Acorns Children's Hospice has provided care for life limited and life threatened babies, children and young people and their families, across the Midlands.

The hospices are purpose built with ten specially decorated bedrooms designed to cater for children and young people from birth to 18 years of age. They are designed to be a home-from-home environment to help children enjoy their stay and make the most of every day

The charity is currently helping over 200 children and over 280 families across the Black Country but relies on the community to fund the majority of its activities.

Thanks to your generous support for the Tettenhall Rotary Santa Sleigh we've been able to make a donation to help the ongoing work of the Hospice.

You can help the Hospice by making further donations here -  https://www.acorns.org.uk/donate/

Support for Compton Care

Thanks to the generosity of the thousands of people who came along to see Santa on our Club Sleigh this Christmas we are able to continue supporting deserving local charities such as Compton Care.

It costs nearly £8 million every year for Compton Care to provide its services to patients free of charge.  With government funding only providing one third of this, the organisation relies heavily on fundraising to maintain its level and quality of care.

Thanks to your support over Christmas we've been able to make a donation to help Compton Care with these costs so that it can continue to offer an outstanding level of service to both patients and visitors.

Follow the link to make as donation to support their continuing work - https://www.comptoncare.org.uk/support-us/donate/

On Parade With The Army Cadets

The Perton Detachment of the Army Cadets has become an integral part of our Christmas Santa Sleigh activities.

Each year the Detachment Cadets, their Officers and Adult Instructors devote hundreds of hours to helping the Club take its Santa Sleigh to visit children in neighbourhoods around the City - bringing a little bit of Christmas magic with it.

This evening members of the Club visited the Detachment at the ACF Centre at Tettenhall College to pass on our thanks and to leave them with a donation to help with their activities in the coming year.

With nearly 40,000 cadets the Army Cadet Force offers young people the chance to take part in exciting and challenging activities such as fieldcraft, adventurous training, first aid, music, sports and shooting as well as the opportunity to travel and make life long friendships.

Cadets have the opportunity to achieve the Army Proficiency Certificate teaching leadership skills, discipline and self-confidence to help equip them for life. The Cadet Force also offers the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC First Diploma in Public Services or Music or the ILM Certificate in Team Leading.

It's a great time for the cadets and a great preparation for life - you can find out how to join or volunteer with the Army Cadet Force on their website - https://armycadets.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo4Pi3Nny4AIVzJztCh3z_wfXEAAYASAAEgJFZvD_BwE

Lending With Care - A Small Investment Goes a Long Way

Its nearly three years since we started working with Lend With Care  - a micro-finance organisation that brings together entrepreneurs in developing countries with people who have the power to help them.

With loans totalling just short of £3,000 to date we've made 53 loans, helped 231 entrepreneurs, 593 of their family members and helped businesses to create 87 new jobs - a little can go a long way

We've been helping people like Mrs Bui Thi Phoung in Vietnam.

Mrs Phoung's family is reliant on the income from their small holding on which they grow vegetables and corn and raise pigs and buffaloes for sale to local merchants

The family lives in impoverished conditions but the loan which we assisted with under the Lend With Care scheme helped Mrs Phuong to invest in seedlings and fertiliser to expand their vegetable plantation and to increase the family's income

The loan to Mrs Phuong has been fully repaid meaning that we can now put that money to work again helping other entrepreneurs.

A Record Christmas

2018 was a great Christmas for the Tettenhall Rotary Club Santa Sleigh with visits to Claregate, Low Hill, Old Fallings, Fordhouses, The Scotlands, Bushbury, ASDA in Wolverhampton, Sainsburys at St Marks, Morrisons in Pendeford and the Midcounties Co-operative in Codsall.

Santa and his Sleigh also helped with the switching on of the Christmas Lights in Wolverhampton City centre, Tettenhall, Bantock Park and Bilbrook, as well as visiting local schools, the Wolves Dribblers and the Young Wolves.

Not only did we have the opportunity to take our Sleigh to visit more children than in any previous year but with your support we raised a record £11,760 to allow us to help more good causes in the coming year.

Thank you for your wonderful support - we're already making plans with Santa to make 2019 even better.

Gordon Banks OBE

We're remembering England World Cup legend Gordon Banks as his funeral takes place today.

Gordon was good enough to support a number of the Club's fundraising events and in 2016 joined us for a dinner at Molineux celebrating the 50th Anniversary of that great World Cup win in 1966 and which raised funds in aid of former Wolverhampton Wanderers FC keeper Bert Williams' Alzheimer's Appeal and other Rotary charities.

The event was one of Gordon's first public appearances after revealing that he was once again fighting renal cancer and the way in which he continued to support others whilst fighting the disease was a mark of the character of the man.
